This was taken at one of my favorite locations, Treasure Island, SF. An unused military building with a window boarded with up-cycled scraps of wood with as little effort or investment as possible, except for one. This is an example of a record of conflicting intent. As a dog will burry an unwanted bone so no one else can get to it, this hastily boarded window indicates that this building has no remaining value except for the brief burden of preventing someone else from finding use in it. Birds, cats and rodents can freely enter and exit the window at will, however the installer of this “ window dressing” did not want a human head to pass through that could result in liability. Now with neglect, I see this building transforming into a canvass of weather and time as strokes and swirling patinas and thinning paint form a composition without the touch of a human hand.
